Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is caused by the build-up of a fatty, waxy substance called plaque. The presence of plaque on the artery walls slows the supply of blood to the heart, and in some cases, blocks it entirely. Symptoms of decreased blood flow include chest pain and shortness of breath.

One treatment for CAD is the use of a stent. As seen in the animation, this expandable meshlike tube provides permanent structural support to prevent the artery from renarrowing after plaque has been cleared.
