Sarah Douglas, at just 27 years old, is one of the best sailors in the world. On the water since she was 7, she competed in world championships as a teen and went on to win gold at the 2019 Pan American Games. With the Tokyo Olympics in her sights, she's preparing for the race of her life.
"I'm fueled by trying to be the best that I can be, to push the envelope, to strive to be excellent in all aspects of my life — not just for sailing," Sarah said.
With the sun in her eyes and the fierce winds pushing her, how does she stay focused on controlling her boat and her destiny? It's all about keeping her mind in the right space.
"I really believe in meditation and deep breathing," she said, explaining that "circle breathing" is what helps her stay centered.
"Refocusing on what my priority is, so whether that's going to be 'I need to focus on what the wind is doing here, I need to focus on my technique,' and just honing in on that one thing really helps me focus and prepare for what I need to do," she said.
