The Emmy® Award-Winning "The Dr. Oz Show" Debates The Right To Die With Montel Williams And Other Experts In An Emotional Show Airing Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011

New York – Oct. 31, 2011 – The Emmy® Award-winning, critically acclaimed and nationally syndicated "The Dr. Oz Show" addresses the single most important decision you may ever make about your health: the right to choose to die.  Actor, author and award-winning talk show host Montel Williams joins Dr. Mehmet Oz and other experts to discuss one of the most contentious subjects in America on Tuesday, Nov. 1 (check local listings). 

“We’re debating the most controversial question in medicine, one you may someday face in your own life,” said Dr. Oz.  “If you were living with chronic pain, should you have the right to end your own life?”

In the show, “Montel Williams’ Suicide Attempt,” Montel, who suffers from excruciating pain as a result of Multiple Sclerosis, sits down with Dr. Oz to share his emotional journey of three suicide attempts to free himself from the pain.  He explains his personal stance on the right to die and why he wants that option if and when his severe pain returns.  Dr. Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and a Fox News contributor, takes the stage to explain why he is against giving someone the right to take their own life and argues why the practice should be illegal.

In addition to first-hand accounts from those contemplating suicide and those who oppose it, medical experts, legal analysts and advocates throughout the country, including Dr. Devon Webster, Gustin Reicbach, Dr. Ken Prager, Barbara Combs Lee and Dr. Ira Bryock, come together for an emotional conversation about the most controversial decision an individual can make.  They discuss the role doctors should play in this topic, the Hippocratic oath to “do no harm” and the states that have passed laws giving people the right to take their own life.

Dr. Oz is vice-chair of the Department of Surgery and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University. He directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital and performs 100 heart operations annually. His research interests include heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complementary medicine and health care policy. He has authored over 400 original publications, book chapters, and medical books and has received several patents.
