Statement from Uber on Sexual Assault

“Uber is an integral part of American society. Every day millions of people enjoy the freedom to ride and earn money, but we are not immune to ills of society either. Sexual assault is a global, societal issue. Our expert partners have told us the most effective prevention is education. We are proud to partner with leading sexual assault organizations to take this important first step. We want to be a part of the solution.”

"All drivers must undergo a screening process before they can use the Uber app, which includes a driving and criminal history background check reviewing local, state and national records. These include the US Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website, the PACER database, and several databases used to flag suspected terrorists. We follow all applicable local laws when reviewing the results of the motor vehicle/criminal screening to determine eligibility to drive on the Uber app. Safety does not begin and end with a background check. Our technology makes it possible to focus on safety for riders and drivers before, during, and after every trip in ways that have never been possible before."
