When deciding whether to buy an at-home DNA test kit, the FTC recommends consumers take steps to protect the privacy of the sensitive information that DNA tests reveal. For example, consumers should comparison shop on privacy: Look through each company’s website for information about how it uses and shares your genetic information. Once you buy a kit, review the privacy settings in your account and make sure they are right for you. If you think a genetic testing company has not lived up to its promises, report your concerns to the FTC.
