Whether we mean to or not, dining with family and friends often leads to eating in excess. It may be due to stress, comfort, or guilt, but one thing is for certain: there are tons of reasons why we tend to have second (or third) helpings. Regardless of the cause, it's important to get a handle on our tendencies, so we can stay healthy no matter who we eat with! Nutritionists Frances Largeman-Roth and Kathryn Scoblick help us tackle these issues so we can find out how to stop overeating around certain people once and for all.
Determine the Cause
The key to overcoming your overeating tendencies is to find out what causes them. If you feel responsible for keeping everyone happy in your family, you may overeat when an argument breaks out because you feel guilty and sense that you lack control. If you simply feel like your family or friends provide a safe space free of judgement, you might accidentally indulge in more calories because everyone else is doing it and it feels celebratory and fun. If you grow up being told to clear your plate, that thought process might still be ingrained in you as well. As dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth points out, "in many cultures, eating lots of food is a sign of love." That relationship with food can make healthy eating and portion control that much more complicated.
