The Digestive Process

Digestion is a complex process involving many steps starting in your mouth. Your teeth break food down into small pieces and enzymes in your saliva help to start digesting some of the sugars in your food. Food then moves to your stomach, which churns the food and breaks it into even smaller pieces. From there, it heads to the small intestine where enzymes and special chemicals help to break down the food into its molecular components so that they can be absorbed into the blood stream. What’s left over hits the large intestine, which absorbs most of the water left over in the food.
