Derived from the nectar of the Manuka tree in New Zealand, this honey is dark in color, more viscous than others, and has been said to have an earthy and slightly bitter flavor. While honey of all kinds is said to have antibacterial properties, Manuka honey may provide a more concentrated dose, thanks to a compound known as methylglyoxal. If you have a mouth ulcer, burn, cut, or scrape, Manuka honey can help heal these wounds and provide relief by destroying the bacteria. Just one caveat: all Manuka honey is not made the same. Make sure to look for the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) label to make sure you are purchasing genuine Manuka honey with the correct antibacterial strength. Some studies have shown that Manuka honey also reduces rates of bacterial resistance, meaning that for some bacterial infections, it may be safer to use Manuka honey over traditional antibiotics.
