Calorie-Free Does Not Always Mean Consequence-Free

Two studies recently presented at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego show that your diet colas may actually be hurting your waistline. You might lift an eyebrow at that study given that diet colas are calorie free. You may even question how a calorie-free drink could make you fat but, unfortunately, the evidence here is mounting!

A study in Texas followed nearly 500 people for almost a decade and found that diet-cola drinkers had the greatest growing waist circumference when compared to non-diet cola drinkers. Further, a 2005 study found that the more diet colas an individual drank, the higher the possibility that the individual was heading towards being overweight or obese. How is this possible? Studies indicate that diet sweeteners may, in fact, trick the brain and actually increase your insulin production. This, in turn, may make it harder for you to lose weight. A diet cola here and there may seem like a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without getting the calories, but are you paying a larger health price for this line of thinking?

There are no shortcuts to good health. Next time you’re craving for a diet cola, why not grab an ice cold glass of water with some lemon instead?
