Your Guide to Underrated Fish

Don’t underestimate the other fish in the sea.

Are salmon, shrimp, and tuna the only types of seafood you eat? You’re not alone. Experts such as food journalist Larry Olmsted estimate that more than half of all the fish consumed in the United States comes from these three species. Though as the saying goes, there are plenty of fish in the sea. It’s time to give underrated fish like char, monkfish, and trout a try. Also known as “trash fish” or fish that is trashed and thrown back to sea when caught alongside more profitable fish, these alternatives are less expensive but just as nutritious and delicious. Not sure where to start? Use the map below to discover which underrated fish is in your corner of the country and print out the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch National Consumer Guide to help you make the best fish choices.
