When it comes to gauging weight loss, most people look strictly to the scale to measure their success. Sometimes, it’s not only about pounds, but the inches you lose and the way your clothes feel and fit. Fashion industry expert Suze Yalof Schwartz shares the top 5 clothing items that tell all about the state of your weight.

Must-Have #1: A Belt


You may find yourself adjusting your belt after a big meal, but how many notches are you losing each year? Be vigilant of your waistline and use your belt to keep your tummy in top shape.

Mark the inside of your belt with your current measurements. Next, mark it with where you want to be once you lose some weight, and where you should never be if you were to gain. If the belt doesn’t fit, then you have gained weight. Being more mindful of where you cinch your belt will help you make healthier food and exercise choices and keep dangerous omentum fat, which increases your risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes, from building up around your midsection.


Must-Have #2: Non-Stretch Jeans

Pants that “give a little” also give you a lot more wiggle room in your diet and a greater opportunity to pack on the pounds. Many women think that if their jeans fit, they’re doing fine – but this is a huge misconception. Jeans that have some stretch in them can still fit even after a 10-15 pound weight gain. Instead, opt for jeans with no stretch and they’ll keep you true to your healthiest weight.

Must Have #3 and #4:  A White Tailored Shirt and Single Button Blazer

If you notice gaps in your blouse or a tug in the fabric across the chest and around your arms – your tops are trying to tell you something. You may not see the extra pounds in your stomach or thighs, but these red flags are some of the first warnings when you’ve put on weight.

As always, weight gain is more than a vanity concern. In this case, weight in your chest and arms throws off your posture and can cause chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Must-Have #5: How Your Shoes Fit


If you’ve suddenly found yourself shopping for wider or larger shoes, you may want to take a better look at the reasons why. If your shoes no longer fit, this could be a sign of edema, a swelling of the feet, ankles and legs caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues. This may present itself as what people more commonly recognize as “cankles,” or calf-ankles.

Mild cases can be caused by sitting or staying in one position for too long, or consuming too much salt. However, in more serious cases, edema can be an indicator of something more serious: heart failure (the heart loses its ability to pump blood effectively and blood backs up in your legs); severe liver disease (compromised liver function causes changes in the way your body regulates fluids); or kidney disease (when the kidneys can not eliminate enough fluid and sodium from your blood).

If you have any of these tell-tale signs, it’s time to see a doctor: stretched or shiny skin, or skin that retains a dimple after being pressed.
