Researchers Say Frozen Orange Juice May Be Better Than Fresh

Here's something to consider the next time you're in the grocery store.

Researchers may have found a valid case for buying frozen orange juice. They studied two cartenoids -- pigments found in plants that are beneficial to the body -- phytoene and phytofluene that are reported to contain a high amount of antioxidants.

The study tested how bioaccesible these two cartenoids were in different forms of orange juice. Being bioaccesible means how many nutrients can be absorbed into the body. Upon testing fresh juice, pasteurized juice, and frozen juice, they found that frozen juice defrosted via the microwave or at room temperature was the most bioaccesible. Even though the fresh juice had the most amount of cartenoids present, the process of frozen orange juice defrosting helped decrease the size of the cartenoids and made them easier for the intestine to absorb them. Make sure if you choose to drink orange juice, whether fresh or frozen, it is done in moderation. Sugary beverages such as juice are not as good for the body as water.
