Why did you want to become a doctor?

I think I knew I wanted to be a doctor when my friend and I were watching a delivery during our volunteer experience at a local community hospital. My mother is a labor and delivery nurse anesthetist, and she talked to one of the obstetricians about my friend and I observing a baby being delivered. As the baby was being delivered, my friend's face turned ghost white, and he hit the floor. I don't think I even flinched; I was completely into the moment and knew I wanted to explore this career possibility further.

What sets you apart from other doctors in your field?

Being fresh out of training, I know the most current surgical techniques and am well versed in the most recent literature. I think my patients would say I am always willing to spend extra time with them in the office or over the phone; my bedside manner and availability definitely set me apart.

What are your 5 tips for living longer?

From an orthopedist's perspective:

1. Don't self diagnose after an injury; many knee "sprains" or subtle fractures often require bracing and/or surgical reconstruction.

2. Attempt to wean off narcotic pain medication as soon as possible; they are extremely addictive and an increasingly large problem in society.

3. Avoid aggressive plyometric exercises; they can lead to severe tendinitis in the unconditioned athlete.

4. A healthy sex life even at advanced age can help maintain.
