Boost Your Energy in 7 Days

Learn how to boost your energy in just six steps with this plan from registered dietitian Yuri Elkaim.

Step 1: Eat Alkaline Foods to Boost Your Energy Through Your Kidneys

Alkaline foods, such as fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and grains flow through your system more quickly and easily than nonalkaline foods, which include processed foods, meat and dairy. The nonalkaline foods you eat promote acid in your body that the kidneys have to work hard to get rid of. This process drains you of energy, something we want to avoid! Alkaline foods, on the other hand, don’t produce acid, so the kidneys don’t have to work as hard and everything runs efficiently for optimal energy. Try to eat one alkaline food with every meal and snack.

Step 2: Use Sprouts to Boost Vitamins and Minerals in Your Body

Sprouts contain higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals than their unsprouted counterparts, making nutrients easier for our body to access and convert to energy. Any grain, seed or legume can be sprouted, and they're easy to add to any meal. Try adding broccoli sprouts, lentil sprouts or alfalfa sprouts to start.

Step 3: Load Up on Energy Fats to Boost Brain Power

Fats make up the majority of our cell membranes–including our brain. You need to feed the brain cells the right fats to help keep you sharp and mentally energized, and to protect the brain from toxins.

Get your energy-fat fix by cooking with saturated fats like butter and coconut oil (these are the most easily converted to energy), monounsaturated fats like olive oil and avocado, and polyunsaturated fats like the omega-3 fatty acids in small cold-water fish, like sardines and anchovies.

Step 4: Eat at Least Half Your Plate Raw to Energize the Gut

This doesn’t mean you should eat raw meat, but vegetables, fruits and seeds are best eaten raw, because when cooked, they lose a lot of their enzymes that we need for healthy digestion, a process that uses a lot of energy. Without the correct amount of enzymes needed, digestion will be slow, and you’ll feel sluggish.

Step 5: Drink Lukewarm Lemon Water at Every Meal to Wake Up Your Organs

Drink a glass of lukewarm water with lemon first thing in the morning and then again at every meal. This combination wakes up your liver and gallbladder to flush toxins out of them, and gets your whole intestinal track moving. Be aware that in order to work properly, the water must be lukewarm because water that’s too cold shuts down the glands in your stomach that produce stomach acid, and the drink has to have lemon in it, because lemon helps to stimulate production of enzymes.

Step 6: Do an Energy Move to Boost Circulation

Try Elkaim's favorite move, the jump and pump to increase blood flow and circulation by pumping energy through your body. To do this move, start in a sitting position, then jump and throw your fist in the air.
