Anthony Bourdain Found Dead at 61

The celebrity chef, TV host, and author has died of suicide.

Travel host Anthony Bourdain, who was best known for his show "Parts Unknown" and his memoir "Kitchen Confidential", committed suicide on Friday at the age of 61. In a statement from CNN, they confirmed the sad news adding: "It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain. His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

This news follows the death of celebrity fashion designer, Kate Spade, who committed suicide in her apartment Tuesday morning. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the suicide epidemic has seen an increase by 25 percent across the country in the last 20 years, with at least 25 states reporting a 30 percent increase. The most common warning signs include:

  • Sadness, depression and low self-worth
  • Feeling hopeless or trapped
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Sleeping too much or too little  
  • Pulling away from family and friends; isolating oneself
  • Lack of interest in things that once were enjoyable
  • Increased drug and alcohol use
  • Mood swings
  • Focusing on death – talking, reading or writing about it
